Position Description

YEP Enriches Summer Camp Counselors are responsible for creating a safe and fun environment for youth campers. Our Summer Camp Counselors are the key to a successful summer for all our campers. Counselors supervise a group of 15-20 youth (along with 1 co-counselor) and assist campers with engaging in activities throughout the day, transitioning from one activity to another (i.e. enrichment, lunch, choice time, field trips, etc.), and offer individual support to campers who may be struggling. Counselors participate in all activities such as sports, games, art, swimming, and field trips, among others. Counselors must communicate effectively with youth, co-workers, and supervisors, as well as parents and community partners when necessary. Counselors will also assist with daily set up and break down of any camp activities or supplies. 

YEP will operate two summer camps during the summer of 2024, one in Central City (1529 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd.) and another in New Orleans Orleans East (12000 Hayne Blvd.).  Summer Camp 2024 will run June 3-June 27, 2024, and include paid training and Camp preparation in Late May/ Early June.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that youth are safe and supervised at all times while at YEP and on field trips
  • Lead youth in a variety of pro-social activities and team-building activities over the 4-week camp session
  • Provide support to lead activity facilitators throughout the summer camp to ensure the effective delivery of educational and recreational activities on the summer camp schedule
  • Always remain engaged with youth and help youth to stay engaged in all activities
  • Model and assist youth to follow the behavior expectations and camp guidelines
  • Assist youth with resolving conflicts in a productive and positive manner
  • Communicate effectively with all participants taking into account varying ages and skill levels
  • Build a positive relationship with each youth in your care and foster positive connections between participants
  • Ensure youth feel comfortable and included in activities
  • Work effectively with YEP staff, interns, and volunteers, forming a strong team with fellow group counselors
  • Assist with set up, prep, and clean up after all activities and field trips
  • Interact with a positive, kid-friendly attitude and serve as a positive role model
  • Direct any concerns to the Summer Camp Coordinators or YEP Enriches Director, as appropriate
  • Attend training sessions as needed
  • Attend any daily check-ins or debrief meetings with the summer camp team, as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned

 Qualifications

  • At least 18 years old
  • Be available for the full duration of YEP’s 4-week camp (Mon-Fri 7:30am-3:30pm)
  • High energy and ability to effectively engage with youth in daily activities
  • Prior experience with youth preferred
  • Prior experience in a Summer Camp setting is highly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, problem solve, troubleshoot, and communicate effectively
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work autonomously and as a team

COMPENSATION:

The hourly wage for this role $15 per hour.
