Position Summary

The YEP Educates HiSET en Español Instructor is a multi-talented and energetic individual who provides quality assessment, instruction and academic guidance to out-of-school youth and adults ages 16 and older. The YEP Educates HiSET en Español Instructor will be based at either the YEP Educates across main learning center or its satellite center and may be asked to work flexibly between locations. The primary role of the YEP Educates HiSET en Español Instructor will be to develop and implement a HiSET en Español curriculum for adult learners. HiSET en Español classes prepare students to take and pass the HISET exam, which is the terminal exam to earn a high school equivalency diploma. As a member of a dynamic and responsive instructional team, the YEP Educates HiSET en Español Instructor will also be expected to teach some HiSET preparation classes in English to primarily English speaking students. The instructor will work closely with and have the support of the broader YEP Educates instructional team, including Adult Education Instructors, Student Advocates and community volunteers. The YEP Educates HiSET en Español Instructor will be supervised by the Instructional Coordinator.

Position Responsibilities 

Position responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Research, adapt and develop HiSET en Español curriculum for YEP Educates
  • Use technology to support instruction and learning and to prepare students for the realities of a technology based workplace 
  • Provide adult basic and adult secondary instruction to students in Spanish and in English
  • Prepare Spanish and English speaking students to take and pass the HiSET exam in their preferred language
  • Work with community partners to raise awareness of YEP’s programs in Spanish-speaking communities
  • Collaborate on the recruitment of students for HiSET en Español
  • Help to create culturally competent trainings for YEP staff that enable YEP to better meet the needs of Spanish speaking students and their families
  • Work with the YEP Educates instructional team to create up to date, student-centered, culturally appropriate and standards-aligned curricula for students functioning at various educational levels ranging from Adult Basic Education learners to High Adult Secondary Education learners
  • Use student assessments and state standards to develop targeted lesson plans to meet individual student needs
  • Collect, input and evaluate student and cohort-level data to determine progress toward goals, and remediate or extend learning opportunities as needed in order to increase a minimum of one functioning level each fiscal year
  • Prepare students to successfully demonstrate skills gains according to a range of assessments, including the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), Official HiSET Practice Test (OPT), High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) and some college entrance exams.
  • Use a restorative approach to support and engage students in class and provide opportunities to increase student persistence and retention
  • Demonstrate responsible stewardship of program materials
  • Keep equipment in working in order and coordinate any repairs or maintenance as needed
  • Maintain accurate records to track student progress and outcomes, both in physical student files and in YEP’s Efforts to Outcomes database, including:
    • Daily attendance records
    • Daily engagement contacts
    • Regular assessment records
  • Attend and actively participate in regular staff meetings and professional development for YEP Educates staff members
  • Meet regularly with Instructional Coordinator for supervision
  • Other duties as assigned

Key Outcomes

  • Serve 40 Spanish Speaking adult learners
  • Serve English speaking adult learners as needed
  • Prepare all students to successfully complete a grade level gain and/or pass the HiSET exam

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in secondary education, post-secondary education, alternative education settings, or Hi-SET/GED preparation instruction
  • Bilingual Spanish-English Speaker (speaking both languages with equal fluency)
  • Experience teaching primarily Spanish speaking youth, young adults and/or adult learners
  • Knowledge and ability to use computers and related technology (MS Suite, Google Suite, etc.)  in order to accomplish key responsibilities
  • Experience with curriculum development, diagnostics, and educational assessments
  • Experience and willingness to teach across disciplines
  • Commitment to the mission and vision of YEP

Salary and Compensation

$40,000 - $50,000 annual salary depending upon experience plus an excellent benefits package. YEP provides an option to full-time employees for 100% coverage of health insurance premiums. 

This position is full time.
